Frequently Asked Questions

This will depend on the type of surgery you have but, in general, physical activity after surgery will help your recovery as it improves circulation and promotes healing. Depending on your surgeon’s protocol, after an operation you can normally start walking, starting with moving around the house, shower and use the stairs at home, and you will often be instructed to complete specific exercises by a physiotherapist.
Before undergoing any type of surgery, it is important to be as fit and healthy as you possibly can. This will reduce the risks that come with surgery and increase your chances of having a successful, uncomplicated surgical outcome. Often after surgery, the recovery period can lead to a decline in muscle mass so it is beneficial to work with a health professional such as a Physiotherapist to strengthen your muscles before surgery through a pre-operative exercise program. We recommend that you attend any pre-admission clinics that your hospital runs, so you go into surgery feeling well-informed about what to expect afterwards and being set up with any equipment you may need.
Exercise plays a critical role in helping bariatric patients to achieve long term success in their goals to lose weight, live a healthy lifestyle and maintain their desired weight once achieved. It is recommended that you work with your bariatric surgeon and a health professional such as a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist to develop a program that addresses your unique needs including your personal preferences, ability and your goals for weight loss and a healthy active lifestyle.

In Australia, a referral is not required to be able to see an allied health professional such as a physiotherapist, although it is often helpful for you to bring as much information about your health history as well as any specific medical or surgical details that relate to your reason for seeing a physiotherapist. There are a few exceptions to this, where you will need to obtain a referral from your GP prior to attending our clinic. This includes:

  • Workers Compensation Claims
  • CTP (Third Party) Road Accident Claims
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Claims
  • Medicare Claims (e.g. Chronic Disease Management referral)
