Lymphoedema Care

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of excessive amounts of protein-rich fluid in the body's tissues resulting in swelling of one or more regions of the body. Lymphoedema can affect the limbs although it may occur in the torso, breast, head and neck, pelvic or genital area.

We offer Level 1 and 2 Accredited Lymphoedema Therapists at Ramsay Health Plus to assist with the following lymphoedema therapies:

  • Surveillance and early detection strategies including SOZO bioimpedance measurements.
  • Prescription and review of specialised compression garments and pumps
  • Lymphatic massage and education on self-massage techniques
  • Exercise prescription
  • Low level laser therapy
  • Education on skin hygiene to prevent infection
  • Advice regarding nutrition and weight management

We provide education on stress management, relaxation and energy conservation, as well as ongoing care to ensure lymphoedema symptoms are well controlled.

Treatment can reduce lymphoedema symptoms and, in the long term, provide people with education and skills to help manage their lymphoedema in their daily life.

We recommend the Australasian Lymphology Association and Cancer Council as wonderful supplementary sources of information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lymphoedema cannot be cured. However, with the correct management from highly trained professionals and self-management strategies from patients, it can be controlled.

According to Cancer Australia, the aim of lymphoedema management is to reduce and control swelling, improve the range of movement of the affected area and prevent infections. You may be referred to a qualified lymphoedema practitioner for an individualised treatment program, often referred to as complex physical therapy (CPT). A lymphoedema practitioner is an occupational therapist or physiotherapist who is specifically trained to assess and treat lymphoedema. The treatments recommended will vary depending on the stage of lymphoedema and the severity of symptoms but may include:

  • Compression garments, pumps or bandaging
  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
  • Decongestive and general' exercise exercises
  • Elevation
  • Advice on skin care
  • Ongoing surveillance and monitoring
  • Education on lymphoedema and strategies to achieve effective self-management.

In Australia, a referral is not required to be able to see an allied health professional with a specialty in lymphoedema management, although it is often helpful for you to bring as much information about your health history as well as any specific medical or surgical details that relate to your reason for seeking treatment. There are a few exceptions to this, where you will need to obtain a referral from your GP prior to attending our clinic. This includes:

  • Workers Compensation Claims
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Claims
  • Medicare Claims (e.g. Chronic Disease Management referral)
