Foot & Ankle

Injuries or degeneration to the foot or ankle can greatly impact movement and walking and interfere with normal functioning; you may lose some quality of life, find weight management difficult and have mood fluctuations due to the sedentary behaviours caused by the pain. Foot and ankle conditions may have many different causes including strenuous activity, overuse, trauma, obesity and degeneration.

Conditions commonly treated by our clinicians in relation to this kind of pain are:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Ligament tears
  • Ankle fractures
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Achilles tendinopathy

Treatment is based on the stage of the presenting condition. It may involve treating acute ligament strain or a tendinopathy, performing pre-operative strength exercises to maximise recovery following surgery, or working through a rehabilitation program following surgery.

The Ramsay Health Plus clinicians follow the latest evidence-based practice and work closely with the referring surgeons and specialists to ensure you maximise your recovery potential.

Our offerings include:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Hydrotherapy

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have had a knee injury and have the following symptoms, it is advisable to seek an assessment by a doctor or physiotherapist.

  • Inability to weight bear on your knee or a feeling that it will give way when you stand
  • Significant knee swelling
  • Inability to fully extend (straighten) or flex (bend) your knee
  • Visible deformity of your leg or knee
  • Fever, redness, pain and swelling in the knee
The best treatment for ankle pain depends on the cause of the ankle pain so it’s best to get assessed by an expert such as a doctor or physiotherapist in order to establish a diagnosis and an individualised treatment program.
In Australia, a referral is not required to be able to see an allied health professional such as a physiotherapist, although it is often helpful for you to bring as much information about your health history as well as any specific medical or surgical details that relate to your reason for seeing a physiotherapist. There are a few exceptions to this, where you will need to obtain a referral from your GP prior to attending our clinic. This includes: ▪ Workers Compensation Claims ▪ CTP (Third Party) Road Accident Claims ▪ Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Claims ▪ Medicare Claims (e.g. Chronic Disease Management referral)
